PERSONALITY

If you thought Hekiru was just another pretty face, you're in for a surprise. It seems that, when asked about Hekiru, the people who work with her generally have three things to say. First, that she has a very strong image of her goals in her mind, and this makes her very stubborn. Second, she works extremely hard to achieve those goals. And third, nobody can understand what makes Hekiru tick. She'll say strange things out of the blue ("What would you do if the Tomato aliens attacked Earth again?") and behave in incomprehensible fashions. In fact, she is such a strange girl that when she first began her career, people used to call her a space alien. That's where the "I'm from the planet Hekiru" thing came from.

Let's take a look at some of her not-so-official data.

As you may know, "Hekiru" is not a normal Japanese name. If written in kanji, it uses the characters "heki" ("blue") and "lu" ("flow"), and reflects Hekiru's love of nature. In addition, she said that she chose this name also because it is gender neutral. She says that she has many tomboyish aspects as well as feminine traits, so she wanted a name that could be both male and female. At first it seems that she met with some opposition from her manager, but in the end she won out and made her debut under that name. On the whole, I believe that it is a invaluable asset, not only in defining her character, but also because it tends to stick around in people's heads as an strange name.

Hekiru decided to become a seiyuu in the second year of junior high school. She had gone to see the anime movie Arion, and it had a profound impact on her. At that very moment she decided, "If it's something that could move me so much, next time I want to be the one who causes people to be moved." She wrote in her junior high graduation book that she would be a seiyuu in 4 or 5 years, and in the second year of high school she decided to try out at Arts Vision's audition. To her surprise, she was one of the finalists accepted.

Hekiru actually had an interest in acting when she was younger. However, she knew that she had neither the height nor the physical presence to be a stage actor. That was why she settled on becoming a seiyuu, a profession where appearance did not play a factor. During this time, she did not realize that many seiyuu were beginning to release CDs and perform at events. After some investigation, she finally made up her mind to try it out.

Hekiru entered Arts Vision's associated seiyuu school in the third year of high school. She told her parents that she would support herself in the meantime, so she worked several part-time jobs during her training as a seiyuu. According to Hekiru, these jobs played an important part in creating the person she is today.

She first worked at a grocery store, hauling produce off trucks every morning and cutting them up and processing them for sale. In addition, she was also a register clerk. After a while, she decided to find a better paying job in a soba shop, but had to quit that as her seiyuu jobs began to clash with her work schedule. For the same reason, she had to quit her next job at an izakaya (a simple Japanese-style restaurant) as well. Then she worked at a Chinese restaurant (and picked up some Chinese too!). It was a well paying job and she made very good friends, but in the end she got fired because she could no longer work enough hours due to incoming seiyuu jobs.

Before she became able to support herself on her seiyuu work alone, Hekiru really went through some hard times, where she could barely make enough to eat. While she could have found better paying jobs, she deliberately chose ones where she would have to speak a lot - "Irasshai! Irasshai!" - because she wanted to train her voice. I think this background in these rather unforgiving jobs gives her a personality that many young people can relate to, because they know that she went through what they are going through at the moment. On her radio shows, she understands many of the experience that her listeners write in about, and can offer her own anecdotes and advice.

As for Hekiru herself, she has a very bright, cheery personality on her shows. On the surface, she looks like a normal girl, very cute and young in appearance. She says herself that she is very "boke", which means airhead or ditz, and certainly she has an innocent and pure air about her. Listening to her speak can be very fun because of her fresh, open and friendly manner. This is the cute side of Hekiru, the person who laughs infectiously when something takes her fancy.

She loves nature, and her hobby is to go for walks. Whenever she goes somewhere new on tour, she invariably wanders off on her own, much to the chagrin of her staff who are afraid she will get lost. Hekiru's answer is, "Don't worry. I'm a cat." Hekiru seems to like cats. She also likes to watch Pro Wrestling, and has a fondness for the phrase "de gozaru!" which is something samurai used. Her love of ajinori (flavoured seaweed) was legendary among her fans. What some people might not know is that she does not like meat that much, particularly beef; it was only recently that she began to eat some beef.

Another thing that makes Hekiru attractive to fans is her interest in anime, manga, and live action shows like Ultraman. While it seems that she does not have time to follow shows nowadays, when she was in school she used to watch anime like Saint Seiya religiously, or read manga magazines. Most of Hekiru's fans have roots in anime and popular culture, so this gives them another level on which to relate.

One thing that Hekiru enjoyed playing up was the "I'm a space creature from the planet Hekiru" theme. She really had fun with that, and her fans went along more than happily. And what lives on Planet Hekiru? Why, Hekikos of course! A Hekiko is a rather ugly little thing with a decided fondness for... You guessed it, ajinori.
