OTHER EVENTS 1998

4179*LOVE Event on 03 May 98

Today 4179*LOVE (Shiina Club) held a fanclub event at Tokyo Bay NK Hall from 3pm to 5:30pm. It was open to club members, who could bring in one friend. I think the hall was 3/4 full.

I went with the two people I met at the Baby blue eyes concert on 17 Feb 98, and one of them was late. We had planned to get there by 12, but we arrived at 1pm and were way too late for the goods sale. By the time I got in, they had already sold out of everything but the latest posters and pamphlet. I was hoping to pick up some old posters, especially Starting Legend '96 Summer Special, and a Hekiko stuffed toy, but it looks like that will have to wait till the next event (which will be in September in Okinawa =:O ). I was kinda annoyed by the deal, but was happy to be there with friends, so I guess in the end it was okay. Can't have it all.

This was more of a concert than an event. Hekiru reprised most of the songs from her Baby blue eyes concert tour earlier this year, in the same costumes. I was a bit shocked to hear Hekiru sing live. I didn't remember how she sounded at the Baby blue eyes concert, but she sounded pretty bad at the beginning this time. But when she got warmed up her voice became much better.

They had a question and answer session in the middle for Hekiru and her band members, with questions that fans had written in. One was, what is your current favorite thing right now? Hekiru said it was potato chips. She has been trying all kinds of potato chips, and her favorite comes in a red box (she couldn't remember the brand). She said that she loved the sound of crunching chips. Another was, what is your relationship with Kobayashi-san of 4179*LOVE. Hekiru said, "We live together." Then she laughed and said it was okay since they were both female. She said that they would stay over at each other's places all the time.

(Note: Urayamashii is the only thing that came to my mind at that point. Goddamn, one day...)

There were many other questions but I don't remember them... One was directed to the band. "Who is the etchiest in the band?" Then the MC asked Hekiru, and Hekiru said she thought everyone was H because they were human. She said if not, things would be boring.

Another one was, what is your favorite sport. Hekiru said pro wrestling. Sometimes she gets so caught up in a late night match that she forgets to sleep.

Also, Hekiru had sung at a friend's wedding a couple years ago. The question was, "What did you sing at the wedding?" Hekiru had sung "Love love de ikou" and "Shoujo Bakudan". The audience laughed. Then Kobayashi-san asked her what she would sing now. Hekiru said, "Dame yo! Dame yo! Dame yo!!" and everyone laughed again. Hekiru said, but seriously, she wouldn't know what to sing because she doesn't really have the appropriate types of songs lately.

At the costume change, they played a long video of Hekiru... It wasn't about anything in particular, just shots and sequences of Hekiru being weird, like running through the corridors of the concert hall in her costume, or dressing up in a bear outfit and handing out flyers, and other footage. There was one part where she had her hair done so it was standing up like Shazna's. The subtitle said, "Mazuna" or something. Then Hekiru started singing a parody of "Melty Love" called "Meidi Love". It was really funny. Hekiru was very weird and very cute.

At the end of the evening, they had a quiz contest. The prizes were 3 shirts that Hekiru had worn at previous concerts. (The tight black t-shirt from Starting Legend '97 Todoketai Omoi, a white version of the shirt, and another blue shirt she had worn). The quiz questions were easy at first but got a lot harder. Eg, which number was this song in the Baby blue eyes concert, or which band member played the solo to this song. They gave two answers and the audience had to pick one by raising their right or left hand. If you made a mistake you were out of the running.

One of the questions was, if Hekiru bicycle got stolen, would she say, "ah, it was getting old anyway" or "I'd go look for it". The answer is that she would look. She said her bicycle got stolen three times before but she always managed to track it down eventually. She says she likes her bicycle a lot.

There were 10 quiz questions. The people who were left went up and played junken with Hekiru for the prizes.

I washed out on the fourth or fifth question. ;_; My friend made it through but he washed out on the first junken. But when he left he said goodbye to Hekiru, and she nodded back and said goodbye. We had to tie him down with a rope for the rest of the night.

They also gave 10 other small prizes to random people. Then they threw 30 balls into the audience. Each one was personally signed by Hekiru.

At the end, Hekiru sang her new song "Dakishimete" which will go on sale on June 20th. It was a hard rock song written for Hekiru by Daita of the band Siam Shade. He played the guitar for her Graduater CD, and will also play for this song's recording. Hekiru wrote the lyrics herself. I thought it wasn't bad, but it didn't grab me either. Actually, the volume was too loud to really tell what the song sounded like. When Hekiru hit the high notes (and she can go really high now) my eardrums nearly shattered. After that she finished with "Graduater".

I was disappointed she didn't sing "Infinity". But I thought overall it was pretty good, especially during the medley of old songs. I still screwed up on the chants and jumps in some songs, but it was a heck of a lot more enjoyable this time around since I actually knew the songs. ^^

I was screaming at the top of my voice and I think I was a bit hoarse at the end. But it was well worth it. I enjoyed it a lot. For some reason, at the beginning I felt very depressed, but my mood definitely picked up. Kuusou Metro is awesome! I hope Hekiru sings some songs from With a Will in her summer tour, aside from Me o Samase, Otoko Nara.

Starting Legend '98 Concert Tour Report / Fan Club Event
Shiina Hekiru at Okinawa Convention Gekiba, 9/19/98

Report to seiyuu-ml

I just got back! These last few days, I have found a whole new meaning to the words "sleep deprivation". I'm also sunburnt. Ouch.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who watched the live! The access numbers will be announced sometime this week. I had heard that the system went down because it was overloaded, so I'm glad to find out that it was still working.

Second, sorry to disappoint everyone, but that wasn't me Hekiru was talking to. I decided not to stand up this time. I think the camera swung by me a few times, and Hekiru looked at me when I waved, but I didn't feel like standing out that day. I should have though...

Anyway, I wasn't wearing normal clothes. I wear a white with blue trim happi (imagine a long yukata open in front) and a white hachimaki (long headband) with the words Shiina Hekiru in kanji stiched in blue. What you saw was a normal girl. ^^;; I probably get mistaken for a guy. -_-\__ (But Hekiru knows who I am so that's okay.)

On to the report:

Before the concert, there was the fanclub event. I arrived in Okinawa before noon and we made our way to the Convention Gekiba where the event and concert would be held. There were three sets of arrivals: Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon. The afternoon arrival was late!! Talk about cutting it close... The event was scheduled for 3-5, and the entrance/handshake session started at 2pm. Those guys got there at 2:45...

I was waiting on them because they were bringing the new T-shirts. Changed _really_ quickly, put on the happi and hachimaki and went in and shook Hekiru's hand.

Well, the world didn't end. It was kinda... normal, really. I mean, she had shook like 800 hands before mine and she was set to do another 156... (957 people altogether). Kinda loses meaning when you're being shoved forward at breakneck speed by the staff. She was wearing a white blouse over a dark one, and a long white skirt. Also, she was caked in make-up. <-- This was the worst part.

But my friend said, "The car is doing fine" (meaning the van with Hekiru's pictures airbrushed on the back and sides) and she said, "Oh! Ah!" in recognition. I was next and I got a kinda funny look, like she wasn't sure what to say or think. I think she was too focused on the rest of our group behind me, the 3 guys wearing masks.

The event started quite promptly. As promised, they were playing all the "Heki-chan no kyou mo ee zo" clips from the previous concerts. I only caught the last few because I got in towards the end. Then the actual event started. We had a Q&A session with Hekiru playing reporter. Bingo with Hekiru songs (character songs included! Ouch! Plus they even had "Yume Made Hashirou", a CD single that isn't even sold but was actually distributed at gasoline stands several years ago). Karaoke contest with 3 groups with the band playing live. Practice for the moves for "Kimete Misete yo Get Back!"

In between they played an edited video tape of the staff discussion, where the staff were making some not-so-discreet criticisms of the calls and stuff that the audience tends to do. Like, "You know that during 'Kizuite'? That's just a little weird." or "That move during 'Dakishimete'... I think it's not quite right."

About high time we got some feedback on what calls are "approved" or not. Until now, we almost never get feedback from anyone concerning what calls are appropriate, and what calls and moves Hekiru doesn't like. Actually, if you can see her expression, sometimes you can tell she finds some really irritating, but it's hard to communicate that to everyone.

Then the cult quiz with some completely unknowable questions such "Hekiru's producer Tairaku is blood type AB. Yes or no?" and "Hekiru had breakfast at the hotel this morning. Yes or no?" The prizes for the contests were signed telephone cards from really old concert tours. After that, we had group photos taken with Hekiru and the band. We lined up by bus (there were 24 buses altogether! And 8 hotels!) and got shuttled very efficiently through the system. The high point was when Hekiru came up to our group and she was smiling this wonderful smile. ^__^ I was third row, a little to the right of Hekiru.

After that was the concert. Boy, they sure started late. We got in at around 5:45 and milled around while they set up the cameras. I was in the 4th row (actually 6th but they shut out the first 2 rows) towards the left side. Couldn't see a damn thing for most of the concert because these two guys in the rows in front were prefectly aligned to block my view completely. Bleh.

The concert started a little before 6:30. I think this was a pretty good concert as far was they go. Hekiru was pretty into it, and the crowd got worked up after a while too. Personally, I found the seats way too cramped, plus the fact that my view was blocked... Wasn't in that good a mood at the beginning so maybe that was why I didn't stand up. But as the concert went on, and I saw that Hekiru was enjoying herself quite a bit, I also loosened up and got into the flow. Towards the end I just lost it. As usual. ^^;;

I was really happy to hear her sing "Super Girls Funky No.1" in the style she was singing it at the beginning of the tour. For a while around the latter half of the tour, she was drifting back into the old arrangement, not the really cool blues style of the new arrangement. I guess her cold is fine now.

Speaking of colds, mine is back. -_- Lack of sleep and too much screaming and singing during the concert resulted in a really really weird hoarse voice. Hope it gets better before Friday.

At the end, during "Infinity", people were still clapping to the beat. -_- But at least many people were singing together, and no one started applauding prematurely in those few seconds that Hekiru falls silent before the last verse. You'd think that fans would know better than to start clapping before the song ends, but that just kept happening all the way throughout the tour, and I think Hekiru was really pissed off about that, although she never said anything.

The end credits didn't quite roll after the end of "Infinity", and I think everyone was quite confused before it started. I like that song a lot. I think a good number of Hekiru fans now own tapes or CDs containing "Book of Days". ^^;;

The encore call was normal. (The song list always includes the encore section so it isn't really much of a special event.) Then Hekiru appeared, wearing the normal camo pattern tight shirt with orange blouse over. The last few times she had changed to a black shirt and green blouse. Yoshi came out on the snake board.

I think everyone was really into it for the 3 encore songs. It was really fun. "Kaze ga Fuku Oka - BETA version" is great! ^__^ BETA is _the_ ultimate Hekiru fan of fans and he has his own style of calls and jumps. Usually I go with the flow but this time I did it the BETA way since I was really getting into it, and it really _is_ more fun! You jump at a different timing from everone else so you really stand out. ^_^;; Plus it's not as tiring. Have to be in a certain weird mood for it though... ^^;;

After that I lost it and was near collapse by the end of Go Wake Up!! (A case of the mind being willing but the body simply not doing what you wanted it to anymore.) Then the "Want You!!" And this time when "Dakishimete" played, Hekiru stayed on stage! It was very surprising, and a little confusing because we couldn't figure out what was up. They played "Dakishimete" past the first verse for the first time too. And Hekiru just sat there with her elbows propped on her knees and watched us with this strange expression. Just smiling a bit. It would have been understandable if she had looked really moved or something, but she just seemed to be watching a show. Some of us speculated later that perhaps she had been willing to do a double encore. But no-one took up the call so she just left? Dunno...

Then we filed out of the concert hall. This time there were a lot of "Moe moe!" "Heki Heki!" calls!

We had to be on the buses within half an hour of the concert ending so we couldn't linger at all. After that, we checked into our respective hotels. I went out for nomikai with my friends around midnight. It was a pain getting everything organized since we were scattered in different hotels across Naha. Got back at 4, slept till 8, ate dinner, did touristy stuff all day, headed for the beach during sunset. Came back, tried to organize another dinner, managed to do it by 10pm, ate then went for karaoke until 2am. If anything, we got more worked up doing the karaoke than the actual concert. I'm surprised the staff didn't warn us off, or that the floor held when all 12 of us jumped. I was so tired I actually fell asleep half way through the ruckus, when they started doing Kouda Mariko songs. :P We ended on "Dakishimete" and "Graduater", then went back. Slept 5 hours. Went to the beach at noon, got burnt on the face and really tanned on the arms, came back in time to catch the bus to the airport at 4pm. All in all, a really full three days. Looking forward to Nakano 9/25 and 9/26.

If only the paint wasn't coming off the painting on my happi. ;_; Everything would be perfect.

Best Denki, Hrioshima 11/08/98

On 11/8/98 there was a talk event with Shiina Hekiru at Best Denki in Hiroshima. The event was scheduled for 3pm but started at 3:15 and ended at 3:45.

The event was announced in Best Denki flyers, the fanclub newsletter, and by Hekiru on her radio show. Over 400 people showed up for it. About 70 people lined up overnight for the event.

At first Best Denki wanted to hold the event in the hall on the 7th floor, but apparently Sony would not give permission so they ended holding it in the CD store on the first floor. They also said that tetsuya and lining up were not allowed, and were not going to give out numbered tickets. After we explained that all hell was going to break loose if they didn't do something, they finally gave permission to line up overnight.

Surprisingly they managed to fit everyone in by completely clearing all regular customers out of the store and filling in all parts. But many people could not see. I was the first person to arrive since I took the night bus on Friday (event being on Sunday), but was about 20 in line since I went to eat okonomiyaki. ^^;;;

They let people in at 2pm, 10 at a time. I was in the second row, about 3 feet from the stage. They played Hekiru's new single "Kono Yo De Ichiban Taisetsu na Mono" while we waited. Then at 3:15 they played a video "History of Shiina Hekiru in Video Clips" with video clips of all her single videos, including the unreleased "Lucky Day" music video of her second single.

Then Hekiru appeared. The crowd was chanting "Hekiru! Hekiru!" _really_ loud. Hekiru wore a blue jean jacket buttoned up, a brown skirt and a brown woolen hat held by hairpins. Kawaii! *^_^*

The MC was a woman from the store who asked about Hekiru's new single. Hekiru had just finished filming the music video for it 5 days ago, and it hasn't been edited yet. It was filmed in Shibuya and Harajuku and it was directed by the person who directed Aikawa Nanase's music video (Tutumi?). It was filmed in 2 days and Hekiru only had one hour's sleep in between.

Then the MC said that Hekiru's new album was coming out but the title was a secret. But then Hekiru pointed to a promotion poster of her concert tour and said, "But it's written right there!" The MC was really embarrassed. The MC said it was coming out on 1/21, and Hekiru said, "It is?" Apparently sincerely surprised too.

Then she asked about Hekiru's plans for next year, meaning Hekiru's concert tour, but Hekiru was very spaced out and didn't realize what she meant. Then she apologized for not paying attention. She said that this time it would be a harder sound.

Then the MC asked the last question. "What is the most important thing in the world to you?" Hekiru said that now that she was doing what she wanted, work made her very happy. Also, everyone supported her, and her fans also want to see her put out more songs, so basically what she is doing right now is the most important thing to her.

Then the event ended. But she said that she would be back in Hiroshima on 12/4 to promote her single.

The time and place was not announced but it will be at DeoDeo Hiroshima 7F, 17:00-16:55. It's a Friday so I still haven't decided if I will go.)

All in all, it was an okay event. Tairaku (Hekiru's producer) seemed to be a bad mood and Hekiru didn't really look like she knew what she was doing there in the first place. Oh well.

Emotional Beat at Spainzaka, Shibuya 11/24/98

Hekiru appeared as a guest on the radio program Emotional Beat. The program runs from 4pm-8pm, and Hekiru appeared for the last 15 minutes.
Most of the gang was there... Yuusuke and Arai-san couldn't make the actual program but they did drop by, Arai-san the day before and Yuusuke that slacker that morning. Haraguchi stopped by too, the poor guy had to work.
I arrived at 10pm the night before to find Matora-san and two other already there, plus Masa and co. Went back to the office, everyone in tow, around 2am. I slept at the office while everyone went to check out Sidney Biru (which turned out to be some kinda dump, apparently). Woke up at 8am, arrive at 9am, waited the whole day for Hekichan's appearance. Not much happened really.
The actual program itself I think went really well. A hell of a lot better than Hiroshima which was, ugh, anyway... Hekichan waved to us and we waved back like crazy, grinning like idiots. I was in one of the prime spots crushed against the railing. It was one of the most excrutiating 30 minutes of my life, especially since I had to squat somewhat so that the people behind could see, but it was worth it to see Hekiru so close. She smiled, looked really nice in her new haircut. She wore a purple velvety turtleneck which set off her, um, attributes really well. ^^\__ Masa swears that she was wearing a really short skirt too, but I don't remember.
The content of the talk was about Hekiru's hair, her current boom, and a smidgeon about her tour. She said that she cut her hair because she had decided, from now on she would really work hard to do what she wanted. Her current boom is the snakeboard. She roamed shops in Shibuya but couldn't find any.
In the end, it was pretty good. Hekiru looked genki, I had fun, and it was much more fulfilling than Hiroshima. After the event ended, we wound up at MacDonalds where I spent like an hour talking with Masa about Hekiru, about what she was doing, what I thought about the hair business, and other stuff. It was... dark but gratifying in a way. Like, I had finally, on my own, come to understand and see many of the things surrounding Hekiru that others had known but I had not realized. So in a way I feel as if I have gone to another level of fandom, in a manner of speaking. It's not like I feel like I'm better than other fans, but just that I am happy that I understand and know more about Hekiru than I used to. Even if it's all pretty much not good news, I'm still happy to know it. Sounds weird, eh? In any case, this was written over a week after the event so it's not quite a true report anymore. Let me get on to the Sapporo event.

Gois at Pals21, Sapporo 11/30

Sapporo was awesome!! And not just Hekichan, heheh... The ramen and gyoza were great (I ate twice, once was butter corn miso and the other was chashuu miso). Ugh, my stomach is rumbling just thinking about it. It was cold there, but really natsukashii because it reminded me of Michigan. Actually it hovered around 0 degrees so it was bearable, but standing around outside the department store at 7am was kinda... cold...
Went with Masa the day before (overslept! because I was writing a rather strong, citical letter to Hekiru... ...), met up with Hasegawa-san and WantYou-san, and of course BETA arrived at 9:30 the day of the event. The day before we ate ramen, and visited Strawberry Field, the cafe where Hekiru had her photo shoot for the KonoYo CD. Hmmm, I'm calling it KonoYo now instead of Kane Desu Ka... That's too bad. :P
The cafe was like some Beatles haven, dark and quiet. We sat around for over an hour, Hasegawa-san and I talking about Hekiru and attitudes to her and stuff... I learned one thing. I said I wanted to think of Hekiru as a person, after that cigarrette incident. And he said, well, if Hekiru was your co-worker, would you have reacted that way? Of course I wouldn't have... And therein lies the key... We shouldn't think of Hekiru as some idol or ideal or whatever. We should consider her a normal person, and so how we react to her, should be the way we would react to a friend or a colleague. No-one is perfect, and Hekiru has shown us her flaws, and we should take it in stride the same way we would if any other person did it. Of course, it's not that simple but I think I've really learned yet a new thing.
And Masa and WantYou are playing name the songs from Hekiru's album. It was hilarious because WantYou could only remember like half the songs from With a Will and BBE... Heheheheheh... After, when we went to Hasegawa-san's hotel... Or was it before... It was before. Anyway, we were talking about songs and I brought up Youkoso Happiness... Except I couldn't remember what it was! And Masa and WantYou couldn't either! Later when Hasegawa-san came down he got it, but at first he thought it was a trick question. Oh, and we were talking about the hair, and the wig and stuff, and I said, what would happen if at the final she was thanking everyone and suddenly she pulled off the short hair all her long hair came out and she goes "Minasan arigatou!!!" and threw the short hair wig into the audience... Bwahahahahahhaha!!! We all had a good laugh at that image, a little bitter but it was just too funny. And the next day Masa said, and Tairaku pulls off his wig too and he's completely bald and he tosses that at the audience too... Man, I almost died laughing, especially since my cold sore still hadn't healed yet.
After we got back from Strawberry Field we dropped WantYou off at his hotel and went to check out Pal21 again, bought MacDs and went to Masa and my hotel where the three of us talked for like three hours about Heki and stuff... A lot of stuff, very serious, pretty depressing, but it was a good talk. Then Hasegawa-san left at 10 something, and Masa and I talked until like midnight about why he liked Hekiru. I saw some of the old newsletters that he had brought with him, on the plane and in the hotel room. It kinda wrung my heart out to see the stuff she had written in 1996, when she was still so straight, naive, and things were still so simple. I just amazed that Hekiru is still such a good person, considering the business she is in and the people around her. She's just too nice of a person really, to have survived so long. And now she's getting hurt for that. She really is strong, but in the end she's only human... I hope she can find happiness someday.
As for the event itself... o_O!! Gah! Well, BETA was number 1, I was number 2, Masa was 3, WantYou was 4, Hasegawa-san was 5... Hekiru was right in front, less than a meter away. She wore a red/orange hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans and she looked... fabulous. Fantastic. Amazing. GAH! I couldn't tear my eyes off her, even though I knew she would be really uncomfortable being stared at. But I just couldn't... she just looked too good. gah...
Especially since she didn't have a shirt under that sweatshirt, and she kept tugging down at her neck... O_O! My eyes kept wandering from her face to her neck to her shoulders to her collarbone back up to the face, repeat ad infinitum. -_-\__ Nasakenai. I gave the host like a couple glances so it wouldn't seem so bad but I doubt it helped any... *sigh*
Uh, Hekiru's looks aside, the event went very well, I thought. The host was good, the talk was interesting and there were no stupid questions. Heki herself was pretty into it, really funny and kawaii and pretty... A little shy at times, laughing really loud at others, great sense of humor, genki. Ah... /me melts into a puddle.
There was a lot of stuff covered. Like, how she finally ate gyuutan (cow's tongue, a delicacy in Sendai).The host asked how it was, and she said... ... ... ... *long pause* "Oishii" in a really small voice. And everyone laughed. And then later when the host asked if there was any food that she would avoid at all costs, (after asking if there was anything else she wanted to try, the answer being no), she said, after a pause, in a really small voice, "Gyuutan". Bwahahahahaha! Kawaii!!
She also talked about how she kept getting these really irritating taxi drivers who would talk on and on. And about how she got her snake board, and how she liked wine a lot recently, white wine. And lots of other stuff.
Oh, and at the beginning the host asked if everyone had bought her new CD, and WantYou was really embarrassed and stuff because he hadn't and we had all ribbed him about how they were going to ask everyone who didn't to put up their hands. And they did! And WantYou was like really sheepish and Hekiru was laughing, it was great. It was nearly 30 minutes long and the time flew by. After the event was done we hung around for a bit. And gah! Tairaku appeared out of nowhere from behind me and looked like he was going to take down the poster, then walked off.
Afterwards, a signed poster appeared and BETA took a picture, and we headed to the station for dinner and it was off to the airport. BETA and WantYou stayed behind to listen to radio. Later we found out WantYou was read! Man, I wish I could have stayed. I want a copy of the broadcasts!
On the way back Masa and I talked about Hekichan and stuff like, what would you do if you were sandwiched between Hekichan and Masako or Tairaku (hell!) and about the, um, uh, growth of her assets and other really pointless but fun stuff.
All in all, one of the best ¥22,000 I've spent. It was a great trip.

Jayland Shuffle at Tower Records Umeda, Osaka 12/14/98
I cancelled my plane tickets to Hiroshima, choosing instead to attend this event. Hekiru was appearing as a guest on the program Jayland Shuffle, and Kono Yo had been selected as the new ending theme for said show. The day before the event, Masa called and said he wasn't going! That was a pretty big surprise, but not unreasonable considering his financial circumstances. So I wound up being the only person from Tokyo going, that I knew of. Well, BETA showed up too around 9 something, but he's a given. I had arrived at 6:30 and was at the place before 7am. Lemme tell ya, it was cold! Not as cold as Sapporo, but just that temperature where it's not quite cold enough to drive everyone away, but where you are just miserable sitting there.
I was about 13th in line or so, and I sat around talking to some people. It was pretty interesting, just kinda making small talk, but I couldn't really relax because I felt nervous about my language skills. That was when I felt like I really wasn't very good... I mean, my accent doesn't seem to have improved, and while I think my conversation skills have gotten significantly better, they don't hold up, really.
Tower Records opened at 11 and we all went in. Oh boy... We had to stand at the booth until Hekiru came on?! Luckily she came on at 4:30, but still, standing there for several hours on end, not being able to sit or rest or anything... Made small talk with BETA, and then Nakano-san and co showed up. Around 3:00 BETA and his friend and I got penned into the little corner we had staked out. It was hot! But relief came in the way of ice cold drinks from Nakano-san. Ah! Ureshiiii! Talked some more with BETA-san about Hekiru... His pronouncement upon listening to me ramble off starry-eyed was "You know you're not going to be able to quit." -_-;;;
Then it was 4... The radio program started. We were at the glass right in the left-most corner (no I'm not in the pictures), and they played all these like, major songs... Hmm, got a little worried... Then waiting waiting... Then Hekiru appeared!
My first impression was... uh, well, how shall I put it... Oh fine. Here it is. My first impression, tight shirt!! damn she's got a good figure...! And my second thought was, this isn't exactly the way you want to dress if you're trying to get people to like you for who you are instead of because of how you look. Let's face it, I could hear the collective gasp and could practically sense all pairs of eye riveting themselves upon Hekiru's chest. Did I mention I hate that particular aspect?
Actually, Hekiru was pretty genki, not extraordinary or anything, but cheerful and with it enough to wave to the crowd. The DJ pointed out the hair thing and Hekiru talked about how she cut it because she felt that she had no choice but to destroy the image that she had been locked with since her debut, and wanted people to like her for what's inside, not for her appearance. I'm not sure if the DJ's praise was sincere or not, nor can I say for certain if what Hekiru said was not lost on the people listening. At first I didn't want her hair to become at topic of conversation, but I'm glad that she took the trouble to explain in clear terms her reasons for chopping off her hair. God knows, she really doesn't say much about it elsewhere.
After about 7 minutes, they rotated people, moving the people who had been watching out of the area and letting others in. I suppose it's fair and good that almost everyone who came managed a glimpse of Hekiru, but just the fact that we had to wait so long under pretty uncomfortable circumstances, plus the fact that I didn't even get 10 minutes... Kinda left me feeling pretty darn dissatisfied.
After the program ended in about 15 or so minutes (from what I could hear of the last part Hekiru talked about how her promotion campaign tour had become a "Shiina tries to eat foods she wasn't able to until then" tour), Nakano-san and BETA and etc, we headed out to look for food. Along the way, or maybe at Tower, I learned from BETA that if Hekiru's new album doesn't outsell BBE by a significant margin, her current music producer is out. And since he is some famous person who produced another, now-famous, singer when she made her break, it would be a terrible blow to lose him. So I guess Face to Face really is the make-it-or-break-it piece. I don't agree with the philosophy, but this time I think I'll be buying as many copies of the album as I can afford. Damn I wish Hekiru din't have to be supported through sales inflation, but I guess that's the price to pay for the amount of money SME has put into her.
Ate dinner, went to Joypolis, a Sega amusement park, and kinda hung around. BETA left before 8 for his flight, and somehow or other Nakano-san and I started talking about stuff. My bus was leaving at 10:10, and they all accompanied me to the bus station and saw me off.
All in all, the event I was not exactly thrilled with, but hanging out with everyone made up for the disappointment. Actually, BETA is a bad influence because now I'm considering trying to make the Nagoya and Fukuoka concerts as well! ARGH!! *sigh* Shizuoka event on 12/17 is out of the question! Yeah, gotta keep telling myself that...
